Avalanche Coffee Sachets

I can’t count how many times I’ve past the Avalanche coffee packs at Coles and Woolworths. While trying to find an easy coffee solution, I finally turned some of them over earlier this year. To my surprise, while they are not labeled gluten free anywhere on the box, they are tested. You’ll see the gluten not detected in the nutritional panel to show that the product is, in fact, gluten free. Which is great news for those who need convenient coffee solutions. Now I’ve only checked the varieties listed in this article. Therefore, you will need to check all varieties when purchasing. The price is around $4 for 10 sachets.

I’ve picked up five of their varieties but I do know that there are more out there. Four are sugar-free so be careful when consuming too many as they may have a laxative effect. In the range I’ve reviewed there are three hot chocolate varieties and two coffees. For coffee, it’s the Mochaccino and Caramel Latte and then a normal and dairy-free drinking chocolate as well as a caramelized white hot chocolate. All you need to do is add 150ml to 200ml of hot water – specifically not boiling – and stir. I’ve found all of them dissolve quite well and they even foam nicely.

Avalanche Coffee 99% Sugar Free Caramel Latte

Starting with the caramel latte it contains milk and may contain traces of soy. Other ingredients include stevia, coconut oil, instant coffee, anti-caking agents and colour 160a. It has a nice caramel flavour with a creamy texture. You’ll get a bit of foam, which makes you feel like you picked up a coffee from a cafe. For me, I do find it a little sweet. However, it is nice on occasion. The coffee flavour isn’t overly strong which is always what you want in a latte. It is very easy to drink and will go well with a morning snack.

Onto the other coffee variety, the Mochaccino is as you would expect is bursting with chocolate flavour. Again this contains milk and may contain soy. Other ingredients include stevia, coconut oil, instant coffee, cocoa, anti-caking agent and colour 160a. This is definitely more my style of coffee. It’s still creamy and gets a lovely thick froth on top. You get that subtle chocolate hit and the coffee in this is a little bit more pronounced. I was surprised that it isn’t a darker colour, but it tastes delicious and that is all that matters to me. This is one that I could see myself drinking often.

Onto the first of the hot chocolate varieties and that is the Caramelized White Chocolate. This contains milk and has no labelled may contain statement. Again it contains stevia, coconut oil, colour 160a and 150a, cocoa powder and anti-caking agent. This is a sweet creamy hot chocolate with a caramilk type of flavour. Definitely rich and indulgent, not an everyday hot chocolate for me but one that I will greatly enjoy when I make it up.

If white chocolate isn’t your thing though then you can always enjoy the original drinking chocolate. The front of the box lets you know that you can have it both hot or cold. If cold is your preference instead of the 200ml of hot water; you add 20ml of hot and 180ml of cold. This contains milk like the others we’ve talked about. There is no labelled may contain statement. Other ingredients include stevia, cocoa powder, coconut oil, anti-caking agent and colour 160a. This is a rich creamy hot chocolate, it’s got a rich chocolate flavour.

And finally, the dairy-free drinking chocolate which is the only one that is not labelled sugar free. It is labelled vegan, plant-based and dairy-free. Like the original drinking chocolate, it can also be enjoyed hot and cold. This contains soy and despite being labelled dairy-free may contain traces of milk due to shared equipment. They do mention that they clean the equipment thoroughly between runs. Other ingredients include coconut oil, cocoa powder and anti-caking agent. This is a lovely hot chocolate that is still somewhat creamy. Although it is a little thin for my liking. You don’t get a strong soy flavour which is nice as sometimes that can be overpowering. I’d happily drink this again, in fact, I do.

I don’t know if we have any other varieties here in Australia. However, Avalanche Coffee does have more varieties listed on their website. We do get the cappuccino here but when I look at the packaging they had a may contain gluten statement. So double-check every time.
