You’d imagine being diagnosed with Coeliac Disease in a country that revolves around beer could feel extremely isolating. Thankfully, the unattainable dream of cracking open a cold one at the end of a hard week is no longer out of reach. With gluten free and Coeliac safe beers readily available on the market. Aside from the widely known O’Brien Beer, there is also the option of WILDE gluten free craft beer.
WILDE is brewed by Koala Beer Pty Ltd; an Australian Brewing Company that focuses on natural and environmentally friendly morals. They cater to the Coeliac market with their WILDE Pale and Raspberry Ales. In 2017, they crafted a gluten free Paleo Ale of ancient grains and campaigned to raise funds to create a WILDE Dark Ale. This Dark Ale is hoped to be FODMAP friendly just like their Pale Ale. At this stage, there have been no further updates on their Dark Ale but fingers crossed that they can add this new beer to their range.
When I tasted the raspberry ale I thought, I’ve found my beer. Since I wasn’t introduced to gluten-laden beers and never developed a taste for it, I chose cider and wine instead. The Raspberry Ale definitely hits all those subtle cider notes which an afternote of that bitter hops flavour typical of beer. It is a rose-gold colour that pours a little cloudy with a decent head that fades quickly. The aroma is rich with raspberry from the moment you open it, however, it is restrained in the raspberry flavour. You certainly get hints of light fruity flavour, this slight sweetness balances the tartness of the hops. The beer is quite bubbly, crisp and refreshing which is something I really enjoy. As per the companies morals, there are no added sugars, colours or preservatives to this mid-strength beer, with 3% alcohol.
The pale ale has a similar golden hue and is also somewhat cloudy. It has a light bitter fragrance and when poured retained a small head for a few moments. The highly carbonated beer has a slight sweetness with a malty aftertaste, overall it is quite smooth and easy to drink. Like the Raspberry ale, the body of the beer is refreshing especially on a warm day. The WILDE straight pale ale is a heavier beer though at 4.5% alcohol. Furthermore, this gluten free pale ale is certified fodmap friendly.
The individual bottles retail for about $4.25, while a 6 pack will set you back around $23.99. If you can’t find a stockist locally, Wine Republic has the Pale Ale on the website with Australia Wide Delivery.
So sit back and know that you can enjoy a gluten free beer with your friends.
