Nudie has become a well-known brand, specifically for Nudie juice. However, Nudie also features yoghurt in their range. Late last year I noticed their new Icelandic Yoghurt in the fridge section of my Woolworths. The pale blue tubs were really eye-catching among the typical white packaging. It’s a great marketing choice for their new product that features five flavours.
You’re probably wondering like I was, what is special about Icelandic yoghurt. The Icelandic yoghurt range is 99% fat-free with a minimum of 15.5g of protein (the natural has 19.2g). They also add no sugar or ‘nasties’ as they call them. Nasties are their term for preservatives or artificial colours and flavours. The four flavours are just as unique as the idea of Icelandic yoghurt, with blueberry and bilberry, cherry, strawberry and lingonberry and raspberry and redcurrant. The fruit chosen for each flavour continues with their Viking motif, due to the fact that they are Nordic in origin.
I only purchased 3 of the yoghurts. The natural didn’t seem appealing and I could not find the raspberry and redcurrant. I can’t say that I’d purchase them in the future either. Out of the three I tried, only one really took my fancy and that was the cherry. It had a better balance of tart and natural sweetness. I found that the strawberry and lingonberry was overwhelmingly bitter and those notes weren’t my favourite. The blueberry and Bilberry was unfortunately mouldy when I opened the tub. Thankfully Nudie has great customer service who provided me with a refund.
The tubs can be purchased in two different sizes. The 500g will set you back around $7 and the 170g snack pots are $3. I would definitely say these yoghurts are an acquired taste. It might just be that I need to adjust my taste buds, as I did with greek yoghurt. Greek yoghurt can often be considered sharp, however, these are much stronger in that natural culture flavour. Therefore if you really enjoy tart natural yoghurt then these will be right up your alley. In conclusion, I’ll give them a miss.
