NEW RECIPE – Woolworths Hot Cross Buns

The Woolworths Hot Cross Buns that I reviewed last year have a new and updated recipe. With a new recipe, comes a new review. However, let’s first talk about the things that haven’t changed. The pack of four will still set you back $4.50. You can find them with the Easter line at Woolworths. Just like last year, there are three options to choose from; traditional, fruitless, and chocolate chip. Furthermore, these are all made in Australia. The most notable difference is that this year the chocolate chip is not labelled vegan. The traditional and fruitless are both bear vegan labels, while the chocolate chip is only vegetarian.

Woolworths Free From Hot Cross Buns New Recipe Fruit

Starting with the traditional fruit hot cross buns; this year they contain soybeans. They additionally have a may contain sesame seeds. Ingredients include sultanas, currants, rice flour, maize starch, cassia, coriander, nutmeg, clove, ginger, pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, yeast, glycerol, psyllium husk, iodised salt, apple cider vinegar, xanthan and guar gum. They felt a little dense in the pack. After toasting they do lighten, but not as much as the other two. There is a good fruit dispersion, however the spices don’t come through strongly. They’re nice but maybe a little bland.

Next up is the fruit free which similarly contains soybeans. As well as a may contain for sesame seed. Other ingredients, include rice flour, maize starch, fava bean flour, glycerol, cassia, coriander, nutmeg, clove, ginger, pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, yeast, psyllium husk, apple cider vinegar, iodised salt, xanthan and guar gum. It’s got a lovely spice flavour, the nutmeg, clove, cinnamon all come through nicely. I think it may be fluffier than last year, at least when heated. It’s nice but subtle which makes it the perfect candidate for my Hot Cross Bun Pudding. Honestly, since I’m not a massive fruit fan I can definitely see myself buying these again.

Woolworths Free From Chocolate Chip Hot Cross Buns

And lastly, the chocolate chip which contains soybeans. Additionally, they have a may contain statement for sesame seeds and milk. Other ingredients include cocoa, rice flour, maize, fava bean flour, glycerol, yeast, psyllium husk, iodised salt, apple cider vinegar, xanthan and guar gum. There is a lovely amount of chocolate chips and when you heat them they get nice and gooey. It has a little bit of a coco pops flavour thanks to the chocolate. It definitely has a lot of air bubbles which makes the bun fluffier. These are quite tasty.

That’s it for the new recipe Woolworths Hot Cross Buns. It’s been a year so I’m not 100% sure whether they are better but they are nice. My picks are the fruitless and the chocolate chip. Don’t forget that Coles also has hot cross buns and so do others. Furthermore, you can make your own with my recipe.
