Note: While the original samples of the Kate Farms Komplete Meal Shakes were paid for by myself. The company has also provided products for this review. This does not change my opinion on the product and everything expressed in the review is 100% my own opinion.
Last year I was introduced to the Kate Farms Komplete Meal Shakes via the AGFL subscription box. We all know that Meal replacement shakes have a history of being grainy and not the best in flavour. So originally I was hesitant to give these ones a shot. I’m pleased that I gave them the chance though because these are the best meal replacement shakes that I’ve had. After hearing how much I loved them, the team behind Kate Farms reached out. They sent me some of their new packaging, for a further review to share with you all.
The Kate Farms Komplete Meal Replacement shakes come in three varieties; Chocolate, Coffee and Vanilla. Their breakthrough plant-based formula is hypoallergenic, catering for those who need gluten free, dairy free, soy free and vegan products. With 29 superfoods contained within each shake, including blueberry, green coffee and acai berries the Komplete shakes bring “you everything your body needs, without unwanted ingredients” (Katefarms.com.au). If you are curious about the other 26 superfoods in the formula, head over to their website for the full list. The shakes do contain rice protein if you have any issues with digesting rice as well as onion for those with fodmap issues.
My favourite thing about the shakes is easily the ready to drink convenience. The majority of other shakes come in powder form or need to be stored in the fridge. This isn’t always the best if you are on the go and can’t keep them cold or find a liquid for mixing. With the Komplete Meal Replacement shakes I throw them in my bag, shake them up when required and enjoy. The only time you need to refrigerate is once opened, but really I’ve never had any leftovers.
The chocolate is definitely my favourite flavour of the three. It has a smooth creaminess that is hard to believe doesn’t come from milk. The cocoa flavour is decent and doesn’t play second fiddle to anything else in the mix. My second favourite was definitely the coffee, it tastes pretty much like a cold or ice coffee. Probably not as sweet, but we don’t really need that extra sugar. It definitely gave me more of an energy boost than the chocolate, so I’ll be saving those for my ‘I’m too tired to function days’. Vanilla takes the bronze in terms of my favourites. I’m really just not a vanilla person; it has nothing to do with the actual flavour at all.
Something I did find was that you really needed to shake them well before drinking to avoid any grainy texture. The chocolate had a bit of a texture at first so I closed the cap and shook it a second time which helped.
The big question though, is does it work? It’s all good to call something a meal replacement shake, only to find out an hour later that you’re hungry again. So I put Kate Farms Komplete shakes to the test. For three days of the week, I enjoyed one Kate Farms Shake at 11.45am at work. To avoid boredom snacking I brought nothing else but a single serve of a snack. I can confirm, for myself at least that I didn’t begin to get carvings until between 4 and 5 pm depending on the day. One day I did eat my snack early at 3 pm which of course could be attributed to extra stress and energy consumption. Naturally, these are only my experiences, I have a decent appetite but the effectiveness of the shake I believe will vary person to person.
If I’ve sold you on trying these for yourself, you can pick up single shakes at places like Go Vita in Highpoint (Melbourne) or similar health food stores – Kate Farms has a helpful stockist map on the website. Alternatively, you can buy them in bulk direct from the Kate Farms website. They also have the trial pack which includes one of each flavour if you aren’t sure which one you’ll like the most.
Even better still as a gift to my readers the team offered a discount code to use on their site. You can use the code: AUSSIECOELIAC at checkout to receive 25% off until the end of September 2017. Shipping is always free, which is an added bonus.
Of course, I am not a medical professional. Any claims related to health in this review have come from the Katefarms.com.au website. Furthermore, you should always speak to your health care professional before making any radical dietary changes. What I can and will say, is that the Kate Farms shakes have kept me full and even though I enjoy a nice warm meal, I’ll be keeping a little stash of these in my pantry.
Until Next time, you can follow Kate Farms over on Facebook for more information.
