Gluten Free Bakehouse – Hot Cross Buns

Gluten Free Bakhouse Hot Cross Buns

This year Easter came early even for those of us who need gluten free, thanks to Gluten Free Bakehouse. Gluten Free Bakehouse is the amazing brand behind the Food For Me Jacqui Cooper range and the Premium Desserts. Now for the Easter season, they are filling our tummies with gluten free hot cross buns in both Fruit and Fruit Free Chocolate varieties.

Gluten Free Hot Cross Buns

The hot cross buns are exclusive to Woolworths stores and you’ll pay $4.50 for four of them. Woolworths receive the buns frozen, therefore sometimes if there are none in the fresh food area you can ask at the bakery counter if they have any out the back. It seems like the stock varies store to store, so you may need to drive to find them.

Chocolate Gluten Free Hot Cross Buns

As mentioned before the buns come in two types, your standard fruit and the chocolate. We heated both varieties in the microwave for 20 seconds before eating. For me personally, I liked the chocolate a lot better than the plain fruit. I found it was softer in texture. They had a light and fluffy texture and were quite moist rather than dry. Each bun had a good dispersion of chocolate chips and we didn’t need to toast or butter it. Despite not being necessary, we still enjoyed the bun when toasted, as it developed a crunchy exterior without changing the fluffy interior. I think it was the addition of the chocolate chips that helped the bun retain moisture. Thankfully they weren’t overly sweet and are egg free as well as gluten free.

Compared to the chocolate bun, the fruit was a bit lack-lustre. I thought it had a bit of a chewy texture and we couldn’t eat it without toasting and buttering them. After five minutes in the grill and a slathering of butter, they were really nice. They had a subtle spice to them, great for those who aren’t a fan of strong spices. There was a decent amount of sultanas, enough that you got one in every bite. The fruit variety is vegan-friendly as well as gluten free. This means that they are also egg and lactose-free.

I have heard a few differing opinions on the taste and texture so they are something you’ll need to try for yourselves. A tip is to look for the packages with the longest best before dates. I noticed that the longer the best before date, the softer the bun texture was. I for one have stocked up on the chocolate variety for our Easter and will be whipping up a batch of my fruit hot cross buns as well.
