Note: Diego’s sent me a show bag which prompted this review. However, all opinions of the brand were compiled from the products I purchased prior to this interaction.
A few years back at the gluten free expo I witnessed a demonstration at the Diego’s Authentic Foods stall. They were showing off their GoWELL gluten free wraps. While they were warm it was possible to scrunch and fold them without breakage.
It is safe to say that all those years ago I was suitably impressed and I am still impressed to this day. Not only did I purchase the GoWELL wraps at the time, the following year at the expo I purchased their show bag as well.
In addition to the GoWELL wraps, Diego also has the GoMEX range of kits. You can find an Enchilada and Taco Kit as well as corn tortillas, crispy crumbs and bottles of sauce and salsa. I have been enjoying Diego’s products for years. However, for unknown reasons I haven’t reviewed them in full. Therefore, when they reached out to send me a care package it was an easy choice to say yes.
Although Diego’s brand doesn’t only manufacture gluten free products, those that are bare the mark of Coeliac Society Endorsement. Their gluten free range contains everything you’ll need to put on a fabulous Mexican banquet.
Gluten Free Wraps
As previously mentioned it was their GoWELL wraps that sucked me in. They are separate from the GoMEX range and seem to be more readily available. The wraps are your standard size and quite soft, with 6 in a pack. As mentioned before when they have been heated for around 10 to 30 seconds in the microwave they are extremely pliable. They can be wrapped loosely without heat but for a tight wrap, I would definitely suggest heating them. Thankfully the wraps are not dry like a large majority of gluten free wraps on the market. These are definitely my number one choice for fresh wraps.
The corn tortillas are very similar just smaller in size. They are also quite pliable and perfect for tacos, small burritos or even for making baked taco cups. If you aren’t sure what I mean, you can place the tortillas in a muffin tray and bake them until they become crispy shells perfect for filling.
The Enchilada kit contains white corn tortillas, their enchilada sauce and the salsa picante. The picante is a lovely little hot sauce packet to add a bit of sting. The enchilada sauce can also be purchased separately. You can find a recipe for either beef, chicken or vegetarian enchiladas on the back of the box. The kit makes 8 enchiladas and is vegan-friendly. The instructions are clear and easy to follow which is great for family dinners.
Soft Taco Kit
The Soft Taco Kit is much the same to the Enchilada kit in terms of structure. It contains ingredients to make 8 tacos. The contents include the corn tortillas, crispy seasoning mix, sweet chilli sauce and salsa picante. The contents of the kit are also vegan-friendly. The sweet chilli sauce can be used as a dressing over the top of your taco or for additional seasoning in your filling mixture.
The crispy crumbs that are included in the kit, can be purchased separately as well and are perfect for crumbing protein. Crumb your protein, cook them and then make up your taco. The crumbs are seasoned with onion, garlic, cumin and capsicum to name a few.
Diego’s have two bottles in their GoMEX range called the MexiSauce and MexiSalsa. Both bottles are described as mild in heat and are vegan. The MexiSalsa bottle is a touch larger at 250ml compared to the MexiSauces 150ml. Similarly to the sweet chilli sauce, these can be used as both an ingredient in your taco mix or as a pour over sauce.
The Diego’s brand is widely stocked all over Australia, however not all locations will necessarily have the full gluten free range. You can find a list of stockists on their website.
A big thanks to Diego’s for sending me their care package which included an awesome reusable bag. I hope you found this overview useful and get the chance to try out the GoWELL and GoMEX range for yourself. If you have enjoyed the range before, what are your favourite products?
