This weeks mini-review is a bit of a different one. I don’t think I’ve reviewed too many drink products as the majority are gluten free by ingredient. However, dairy alternatives can often have gluten added so I think it is important to review gluten free beverages too. I’ve added a new Beverages page to the Product Reviews tab. Here you can find reviews like this one as well as my Gluten Free Beer reviews and anything else that may fit the bill.
Califia Farms, a US-based producer launched their almond milk here in Australia in early 2017. They didn’t hit my radar though until they introduced their new range in December. This new range was ready-to-drink cold new almond milk coffee. While I don’t have any issues with dairy, I have always enjoyed almond milk. I use it in a lot of my baking, smoothies and just to drink on a weekly basis. So when I saw the 750ml cold brew in the fridge section of Woolworths I knew I had to try it.
The first three products from Califia Farms that caught my attention were the 750ml Almond Milks. These, as I mentioned, can be found in the milk section of Woolworths and Coles stores. My store has them retailing at $4 a bottle in the Cold Brew Coffee, Unsweetened Vanilla and Unsweetened Traditional Almond Milk. In addition to being gluten free, they are also vegan, soy free and carrageenan free. The product also boasts being low in saturated fat.
Out of the three, my favourite is definitely the Cold Brew Coffee. It has that iced coffee flavour but with a bit more intensity. I think this has been my most frequent purchase this year. It gives me a good burst of energy which is great for those mornings when I don’t want to go to work.
The Unsweetened Vanilla and Unsweetened Traditional almond milk are exactly as they sound. If you don’t know much about the flavour of almond milk it is a thin nutty liquid with a light creaminess. The unsweetened versions can be a bit confronting to those starting off but now I really enjoy them. The Vanilla has a subtle vanilla flavour that adds a bit of natural sweetness but it isn’t enough of a difference to me to warrant buying it over the unsweetened traditional.
After enjoying the 750ml products, I saw in a Food News article that they had also introduced single 310ml portions as well. These two flavours are the standard cold brew and a Cocoa Noir. I haven’t managed to find these yet but am definitely on the hunt They are supposed to retail for $3.30 and again are available at Coles and Woolworth’s. If you have seen these new smaller portions please let me know where!
I hope you enjoyed this mini review. What do you think about the Califia Farms Products?
