Battle Of The Brands: Bread – Woolworths, Coles and Aldi

When it comes to bread; we all know that the supermarket home brands are the cheapest ready-made options. If you are on a budget, my bread budget battle suggests that a packet mix may be easier on the wallet. Not everyone has the time to make their own bread. So which of the supermarkets has the best gluten free bread? I’ve laid it all out in this battle of the brands.

Woolworths

Gluten Free Bread Woolworths

The Woolworths bread was a game-changer when it was released. The white bread is not airy but thankfully not tough to chew. It has a nice flavour and doesn’t resemble cardboard. This was the first bread I was able to have a fresh sandwich on. I wouldn’t say it is exactly like normal bread but it is edible. The slices are smaller than the Abbott’s or country life loaves. Due to this, you don’t get a lot of filling in them but it is reasonable. The loaves cost $4.99 at Woolworths stores.

Coles

At almost the same time or maybe just before the Woolworths bread was released, Coles tackled gluten free bread. The Coles simply gluten free is similiar to the Woolworths in size and flavour. I find them very close in density and texture. I know that some people prefer Coles over Woolworths but to me it is much to muchness. This loaf is also $4.99 and the slices are the same size.

Aldi

Recently Aldi underwent a reformulation of their gluten free bread. Previously my mum described the bread as crumpet like. I can see why. The bread has more air holes and seems fluffier than the Woolworths or Coles. It has a nice structure and good flavour. It toasts well and could be used for fresh sandwiches. I definitely enjoyed it but again it isn’t ‘normal’ bread. The Aldi bread is sold for $3.99 at stores.

Realistically all three of the supermarket brands are very similar in size, taste and texture. If you prefer one over the other then definitely stick with that but if you haven’t decided yet then I’d go for the closest store to you. Other than the Aldi being airy there isn’t too much of a difference.

Thankfully they all are able to be made into fresh sandwiches if stored properly. Although I wouldn’t say they are the freshest. Make sure once the packet is opened you store them in an airtight container. They can last at least a week if stored properly.

Which one is your favourite? I think I like the Aldi the best however my local store doesn’t sell it often so I’ll stick to the Abbott’s for now.

Until Next Time;

  1. I’ve tried Coles, Aldi and Helgas. I quite like the Aldi one if I need white bread (e.g. with baked beans) or attempting to make eggs / toast / bacon. The Aldi bread you can actually toast without having to hold it in there for 20 minutes!

    Helgas I quite like as well for making sandwiches!

    1. I agree. I don’t eat much bread but Abbott’s is the only one I buy now. Unfortunately, it isn’t available in every location, unlike these supermarket brands. It is always good to compare all the options. Many of my readers have told me that they love the Woolworths one over the Coles but personally I think they are exactly the same.
