AGFL: The Box – January 2016

AGFL The Box January

It’s here! Well, technically it was here last Tuesday. I am of course talking about the first gluten free subscription box of 2016! If you haven’t heard about the Australian Gluten Free Life subscription box, you can find helpful information on my AGFL: The Box page. They now also do six monthly subscriptions! I have been looking forward to them having a longer subscription period for people like myself who cannot get enough of their box.

The box is shipped during the third week of every month and orders for the February box need to be placed before the 14th.

Januarys box has been designed to kick off the year in a healthy fashion with less items than we usually receive but still are worth the box total.

The first item in the box is from Funch; it is a make your own protein balls packet mix. I received the Vanilla & Coconut flavour however on the promotional card we received it shows eight different flavours. According to the back of the packet it allows you to create 15-20 balls; you simply add coconut oil, pitted fresh dates or alternatively rice syrup and water. I never really jumped onto the protein ball bandwagon but I might give these a shot. Maybe I can try and create cookies out of it. The 150g packet retails on their website for $12.95 and they have a range of stockists.AGFL Funch Gluten Free Protein Ball Mix

Another big bag that I pulled from the AGFL box was a 500g satchel of Teff Grain from Teff Tribe. For those who didn’t know Teff is the newest spotlight product in the superfoods range. I haven’t worked much with teff personally but it is on my to do list. The back of the packet recommends that you cook it like couscous or polenta. Stating “One (Teff Grain) you can do more with than just whiz, bake or boil and where the only limit is your imagination” As our recipe this month AGFL included a Fresh Green Teff Salad from the Teff Tribes own recipes. The 500g packet retails on the their website for $12.95

I was pretty happy to see the bottle of Alfa One Rice Bran Oil. I had just run out of cooking oil at home and needed it to shallow fry my Beer Battered Prawns. There isn’t too much to say about it, while not terribly exciting it had a perfectly timed arrival and is very useful. A 500ml bottle will cost you $4.95 at Coles.

We also received a tiny sample of the Cacao crunch from a supplier we have previously seen products from; Power Super Foods. This is just a tiny little sample of their product which you can purchase in a 100g bag for $7.95 or a 200g or 1kg bag. This sample is probably less than $1 worth so I haven’t added this to the AGFL box total.

The last two products in the box were two 20g packs of the Mamee vegetable flavour rice sticks. They are amber compliant with the state school canteen strategies, have no added MSG, no flavour enhancers, no artificial colours and are GM free as well as FODMAP friendly. I have always found the Mamee snacks to be pretty handy. You will pay $6.66 for a pack of 10 at Coles; this leaves our two packets at a cost of $1.33

As I said a smaller box this time, but after being treated to so many goodies in the December box no one should complain. The total value of this box was still above its total cost at $32.18 and of course you have to add shipping in there somewhere. I reiterate that the box is not as entertaining as the December box but it is highly useful and has already provided me some great moments in the kitchen.
